What is Rising Damp?

Rising damp is damp that occurs, generally in older buildings, when water rises up through walls via capillary action. Absorption in Masonry is the ability of moisture to flow up the wall in in opposition to gravity.

A simple analogy is the water rises up the wall of a building in the same way that that water would absorb up through a sponge if it was placed in a bucket of water.

Bricks and mortar are very porous and contain fine capillaries, through which water can rise.

With this moisture salt contamination is drawn up with the moisture. The action of this salt contamination drying out ( generally at 1 meter High ) is what causes wall to blister and bubble.

Do I have Rising Damp?

The most common visual symptom of rising damp is dampness starting from the floor upwards – often causing paint to flake or render to blister. Damage caused by rising damp, can also result in a wide range of other symptoms including:

  • Damp smells or a musty odour
  • Reduced temperature at the lower portion of the wall
  • Rotting of floor timbers near an effected wall
  • Crumbling or blistered plaster due salt crystallisation

Westox Cocoon is the perfect choice for Halting Deterioration

Cocoon works by drawing the salt out of the masonry it is applied to. Cocoon is spread in a 10mm thick layer where it slowly releases water into the masonry to place the build up of salts in the surface of the wall into solution.
As the cocoon dries, the water containing the salts is drawn into it. The cocoon is then removed, along with the salt.
